Risk Management Delivers Security in Ride Share

Risk Management Delivers Security in Ride Share

In business, risk management is defined as the process of identifying, monitoring and managing potential threats in order to minimize the negative impact they may have on an individual or an organization.  Ride Share Security is the state of being free from danger, risk or threat.  The Reliable Rider Members Only Ride Share System is designed to maximize security for Club Drivers and Club Members.

Drivers

Ride Share drivers can be victims or perpetrators.  That is why background checks of drivers are needed as a risk management strategy.  See Are Ride Share Drivers at risk for Violence for many examples of riders and drivers as victims.  Reliable Rider Club Drivers must have at least three years of driving experience. Background checks of criminal history and driver’s records are required. The Reliable Rider Club pays for these background checks. Vehicles

Vehicle defects can cause accidents.  That’s why regular vehicle inspections are a practical risk management strategy.  Defective ignitions can cause accidents. Without power, the power steering and brakes do not function correctly, and airbags may not deploy. Many deaths and disabling injuries have been connected to the defective ignition switches. Defective brakes can cause accidents. Brakes or brake lines that fail can leave a driver unable to control the vehicle, leading to a serious or deadly collision. Defective tires can cause accidents.  Tires can be manufactured with flaws. The flaw may occur in a large lot that is later recalled, or in a single defective tire. A sudden blowout can lead to an accident resulting in injury or death.

Reliable Rider Club Vehicles are serviced and inspected weekly on Saturday mornings. This means safer rides, because the age, quality, maintenance and safety of the vehicles is transparent to all club members and drivers.

Accidents

Tens of thousands of individuals are killed in auto accidents each year. Car accidents also result in hundreds of thousands of long-term disabilities every year. One of the saddest facts about car accidents is that most of them are preventable. A study by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (2016) found that human error accounts for anywhere between 94% to 96% of all auto accidents.  In America, it is common practice for drivers to regularly exceed the speed limit, even if it is just by 5 or 10 mph.  Speeding is one form of aggressive driving that increases the likelihood of a car accident. There are many other ways that motorists drive aggressively as well. These include tailgating, making sharp turns, speeding through a yellow light, dangerous passing maneuvers, and many others. Sometimes, aggressive driving crosses the line into recklessness, which only increases the dangers of a vehicle accident.  Mobile phones have heightened the risk of accidents that are caused by distracted driving. While motorists have always had distractions, texting and other forms of electronic messaging bring this hazard to a whole new level. When someone is sending or reading an electronic message, they are distracted manually, visually, and cognitively, which means their focus is taken completely away from the road where it belongs. It is well-known that driving while intoxicated greatly increases the chances of getting into an accident. Alcohol and various types of drugs can make a motorist sleepy and slow their reaction times, or it can have the opposite effect and put them into a state of mind where they have willful and wanton disregard for the rules of the road and the safety of others.  About 20% of drivers admit to having fallen asleep behind the wheel during the past year, and about 40% say that this has happened at least once since they have been driving.  In-vehicle cameras (Display Ride) can help resolve many legal issues related to accidents, because it provides real-time footage of what happened in front of the vehicle and in the interior of the vehicle.

Criminal Acts

The Uber Safety Report of 2017-2018 showed 19 deceased parties.  Eight  were riders using the Uber platform and 7 were drivers using the Uber platform, and 4 were third parties. The Uber Safety Report showed nearly 6,000 incidents of sexual assaults.  Non-Consensual Kissing of a Non-Sexual Body Part was reported to occur in about 1 in every 2,000,000 completed trips. Attempted Non-Consensual Sexual Penetration was reported to occur in about 1 in 4,000,000 completed trips. Across these 5 categories of sexual assault, riders account for nearly half (45%) of accused parties. Among the sexual assault incidents, the company counted 464 reports of rape in 2017 and 2018. About 92% of the victims were riders and roughly 7% were drivers. Women and female-identifying individuals comprised 89% of the victims, while men and male-identifying individuals made up about 8%. In-vehicle cameras (Display Ride) can help resolve many legal issues related to criminal acts because it would provide real-time footage of the crimes that occurred.

Sexual Harassment

Female rideshare drivers report a wide range of unwanted experiences:  having passengers flirt with them, solicit them for sex, or making unwanted advances toward them.  About 20 percent of Lyft drivers and 25 percent of Uber drivers in the US are women.  Reliable Rider risk management practices requires Background checks of all Riders (Club Members).  Having a maximum club size of 30 to 60 members means you won’t be riding with strangers, but rather with people you see on a weekly or monthly basis.  See Are Female Ride Share drivers at risk for Sexual Assaults for more discussion.  In-vehicle cameras (Display Ride) can also make conditions much safer for both drivers and riders.
